Wicky eliminates Schiavone in Doha

Yanina is through to the third round in Doha, after eliminating former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone in straight sets.
Although Schiavone, the number seven seed, was off to the best start (2-0), Yanina hang in there and levelled things up, eventually taking things into a tiebreak which she convincingly won 7-4. She also went up 4-2 in the second set and seemed to have victory at hand, but Schiavone showed fighting spirit making it 4-all. That was, however, just a brief revival as Yanina handily closed out the match by winning the next two games.
In the third round, she meets Russian Ksenia Pervak.

No final for Wickmayer in Paris

Yanina Wickmayer was playing the German Angelique Kerber in the semi-finals of the tournament in Paris. The German is ranked 2 places higher than Wickmayer on the rankings and during the entire match it was clear that the two are closely matched.
Yanina had to play late last night, but that didn’t keep her from fighting for every point. The first set both girls were so closely matched that a tie breaker would have to decide the set. In this tie breaker Yanina got 4 consecutive set points of which the first already decided the set. 7-6 [7-2] for Wickmayer.
The second set had a totally different scenario. Kerber picked up her game and went through to 5-1. However Yanina wasn’t willing to give up just yet and managed to return to 5-3. In the nineth game Kerber served out the set to take it with 6-3.
A third set would decide on the finalist. Yanina took a blitz-start and took a 3-1 lead. Then the fatigue started to weigh on her. With a double fault on break point, she gave her service game to the German who took her chance to level the scores to 3-3. Kerber went on to take a …

Sweet revenge in Paris

In the Paris quarterfinals, Yanina overcame a strong challenge frm German Mona Barthel, who still proved too good in the Hobart final just last month.
Although Yanina fell behind at the start of the match, she got her game together again quickly, taking the first set 6-4. In the second set, Yanina found herself down 0-5, but battled back to take the set into a tiebreaker. However, it was Mona Barthel who took that tiebreak 7-3.
Nevertheless, Yanina had found confidence and stormed into a 4-1 lead in the third set. She didn’t quite look back from that, eventually winning 6-3 well past midnight. “I’m tired and hungry,“, she confessed.
In the semis this Saturday, Yanina takes on Angelique Kerber who surprisingly ousted top seed Maria Sharapova.
