In this 3rd round match, Yanina had to go up against the experienced Swiss Patty Schnyder. Wickmayer had won the toss and started to serve. Schnyder showed in this first game already that she was determined to make Yanina, who is injured at the heel, move around the court a lot. This strategy seemed to work in the first game, because in no time the Swiss was up 0-40. At that point Yanina tried a drop shot, but Schnyder could easily reach it and dropped the ball right behind the net to break. In the next game, however, Yanina found her drive and immediately broke back. What followed then was nice tennis with great point on both sides, but Yanina managed to hold serve and break a second time to get a 3-1 lead. At that point it was already clear that it was going to be a tight match. Schnyder managed to level the scores again to 3-3. When Wickmayer started to serve at 3-3, she accidently dropped her racket when coming out of the service. Luckily for her, the ball didn’t come back. Both players stayed on serve, putting the pressure on Schnyder at 5-4 to stay in the set. After a long rally at 30-30, Yanina got a setpoint, but here Schnyder’s experience showed. Schnyder got to deuce and went on to take the game. Schnyder then got a breakpoint on Yanina’s serve, but with a winner, followed by a winning serve, Yanina corrected the situation. Schnyder wasn’t willing to give up just yet and took her service game to get a tie breaker. The Swiss took the best start in this tie-breaker, but Wickmayer kept on fighting and came back to 5-5. At 6-5 she got her 2nd setpoint and this time converted it. First set: 7-6.
At the beginning of the 2nd set, Schnyder didn’t seem able to put the frustration aside from losing the first set, while she came so close. Yanina on the other hand went through on her elan to immediately break Schnyder. In the 2nd game Schnyder seems to have her act back together and she levels the scores to then win her own service game and get a 2-1 lead in this set. What followe was a breakfest. The first one to hold serve again was Schnyder and that on an important moment, namely when she could serve for the set at 3-5. Second set: 3-6
The beginning of the third set was a continuation of the second, Yanina losing her service game, eventhough she kept fighting for every point. The Swiss was playing with a lot of confidence. When 2-0 down, Yanina’s serve picked up again and for the first time since the end of the first set she held serve. In the fourth game, Schnyder started to make more errors and Yanina got back into the match. These past two games clearly gave Yanina confidence as she went on to lead 3-2 in this final set. They both stayed on serve after that, but the match was thrilling with chances on both sides. At 6-5 Yanina got to matchpoint, but it was averted by Schnyder and a deciding tie breaker became a fact. At 7-6 Yanina got her second matchpoint and after more than two and a half hours of play, the match was handed to her by the Swiss who hit a double fault.
