Yanina takes Belgium into the lead  07/02/2010
Yanina won the first duel in the Fed Cup meeting between Poland and Belgium in the Polish city of Bydgoszcz. This brought Belgium into a 1-0 lead.

Yanina kicked off the Fed Cup duel between Belgium and Poland. In the absence of the Urszula Radwanska (she has a back injury), Marta Domachowska (WTA-135) was summoned by the coach as the number 2-player. However, don’t be fooled by the ranking of the Polish girl. She used to be top-40 a few years ago and she is a real team player. Prior to this match, she had only lost 2 out of all her previous Fed Cup matches.

The first set of the match was a very close call. They were both serving well. Yanina had some trouble getting Domachowska’s serve on the body under control. Neither one of the players was able to collect breakpoints until the 9th game. It was the Pole who converted her second break point and got a chance to serve for the set. Domachowska collected 3 setpoints. She wasn’t able to convert the first two (she hit a double fault on the first one), but like they say “third time’s a charm”. Domachowska won the set with 6-4.

In set 2 Yanina picked up her game and made less unforced errors. This got translated into a 3-0 lead and a 6-1 win of the 2nd set. At this point it seemed as if Domachowska was lacking some match rhythm and Yanina would easily finish it off in the third. However the Pole was not ready to let go and kept fighting till the end.

In this final set Yanina broke her opponent’s serve for the first time at 1-1. At 3-2 for the Belgian it was the Pole who collected break points to even the score again, but Yanina kept her cool and managed to hold serve. Of course this put pressure on Domachowska, who at 5-3 for Wickmayer had to serve to stay in the match. She couldn’t keep her nerves under control and Yanina finished it off, taking Belgium to 1-0 in this Fed Cup meeting.

Later on Saturday Kirsten Flipkens (WTA-81) played her match against Agnieszka Radwanska (WTA-9). Flipkens lost the match 6-2 7-6(5) after injuring herself during the tie breaker. This evened the scores to 1-1. Today, Sunday, Yanina will play the first match of the day against Radwanska.
