Yanina loses in 1st round after really tight match 10/02/2010

Yanina didn't manage to advance to the 2nd round of the Open Gaz de France in Paris. She lost to the Croatian Martic in 3 sets.

In the first round of the Open Gaz de France in Paris, Yanina had to play the Croatian wildcard Martic. In the beginning of the match they both stayed on serve and it was the Croatian who managed to break her opponent first at 2-2. She was helped by faults of the Belgian. Right after this break, she received medical treatment for her thigh. However, she didn’t seem hindered by the injury at all. With some good serves she took a 4-2 lead. Yanina then started to play more aggressively, making less mistakes. She holds serve and in the next game gets chances to break back, but in the end it is Martic who, coming to the net to make the point, takes the game. Yanina answers with a love game and at 5-4, Martic gets to serve for the set. She collects a set point, but hits the ball long. The 2nd set point gets hit into the net by Yanina. 6-4 Martic.

In the first game of the 2nd set, Yanina plays dominantly, giving her opponent only 1 point. Martic in return serves aggressively as well. The next game is a bit closer, again because of faults of the Belgian. She hits a double fault, but takes the game with an ace. At 2-2 the same scenario as in the first set seems to repeat itself. After a hardly fought game, Yanina manages to hold serve and take a 3-2 lead. In the next game Yanina collects a breakpoint, but when at the net, gets passed by Martic. With an ace on game point, the Croatian levels the score. At 4-3 Yanina collects 2 breakpoints. She converts the 2nd and can now serve for the set. She does what she has to do and we get a third set.

Martic holds serve during the first game of the set, on love. The stay on serve, but Martic collects a breakpoint in the 4th game. Yanina gets rid of this by hitting an ace. She levels the score to 2-2. At 3-3 and a game point for Martic, a ball which was called out by the linesmen is corrected and called ‘good’ by the chair umpire. Wickmayer is not happy with this decision, as she was certain the ball was out. She answers with a good and aggressive service game to level the scores again to 4-4. Both players keep on fighting till the very end. With a love game she takes the score to 5-5. At 5-6 Yanina again needs to serve to stay in the match and to hopefully finish it up in the tie breaker. Martic advances to 0-40, but Yanina comes back to deuce, hitting some great winners. With a great return Martic collects a fourth match point. With a winner cross court she finishes it off: 6-4 3-6 7-5.
