Yanina through to 3rd round Indian Wells 13/03/2010

Yanina, the 13th seed at Indian Wells, overtook in her 2nd round match German Julia Goerges in 2 sets.

Yanina, being the 13th seed, had a bye for the first round. In the 2nd round her opponent was Julia Goerges (WTA 69). The two had played each other before and the statistics were in favour of the Belgian.

It was Yanina, who took a blitz-start. With a good service game (only 1 second serve, which turned out to be a double fault), even hitting an ace, she took the first game. Julia couldn’t do anything except for running after the facts during the first 3 games of the match. In 3 games time, she only collected 3 points. In the fourth game, the German seemed to get through, winning her own service game. She then even collected 2 breakpoints on Yanina’s serve, to come back to 3-2, but it was Yanina who took the game. She hit her 2nd double fault of the match on her first game point, but the second she converted. Both players then held serve, leaving Goerges to serve to stay in the match at 5-2. Yanina gets 2 setpoints at 15-40. She converted the 2nd and takes the set with 6-2.

Set 2 started differently. The first game was hardly fought for, but Yanina hit her 3rd double fault at 30-30, handing her opponent a breakpoint, which the German converted. At 40-30, Goerges had the chance to get into a 2-0 lead, but Yanina came back to deuce, got to break point and converted it to even the scores. Goerges then speeded to 0-40 standings, handing her 3 break points. Yanina could save the first, but on the second she hit her fourth double fault of the match. With her first ace of the match, Goerges collected 3 game points and won the game on love. Yanina hit her 3rd double fault of the set at 0-30, handing Goerges a triple break point. She saved the first 2, but hit another double fault on the third, putting her a double break behind. With 2 consecutive aces, the German collected a triple game point, but Yanina came back to deuce. This puts pressure on Goerges, who hit a double fault, handing Yanina a break point, which she converted. Yanina then quite easily wins her own service game (for the first time this set), getting back to 3-4. In the next game, Yanina breaks back again to level the scores to 4-4. She kept on fighting and took her 4th game in a row. Yanina collects a triple set point and converts the first to advance into the 3rd round. There awaits the winner of the match between Daniela Hantuchova and Roberta Vinci.
